What Is Claw Retipping?
Claws are the small metal prongs that hold a gemstone securely within its setting.
Over time, these claws gradually wear through from everyday use. Rings worn daily, particularly engagement rings, are especially prone to claw wear.
Claw retipping involves rebuilding worn claws by adding new metal to restore their strength, shape and ability to securely hold the stone.
If the claws have become excessively worn, complete claw replacement or setting reconstruction may be required.
Why Is Claw Retipping Important?
Worn claws are one of the most common causes of gemstone loss.
As claws wear down, they become thinner and weaker, reducing their ability to hold the stone securely. Eventually a claw may break, bend or wear away completely, allowing the stone to loosen or fall out. A worn claw may lift and get caught in clothing, towels and sheets, causing the claw to break off entirely.
Replacing a lost diamond or gemstone is often significantly more expensive than maintaining the setting that protects it.
Signs Your Claws May Need Attention
- Claws appear thin or flattened
- Claws catch on clothing
- The gemstone feels loose
- One or more claws appear shorter than the others
- A claw has broken or bent
- The stone moves when touched
If you notice any of these signs, we recommend having your jewellery inspected as soon as possible.
How Often Should Claws Be Checked?
We recommend having rings inspected every 12 months, particularly engagement rings and rings worn daily.
Many claw repairs can be identified and addressed long before a stone is at risk of being lost.
A simple inspection can often prevent a much larger repair in the future.
Can Worn Claws Be Repaired Before The Stone Falls Out?
In most cases, yes.
The best time to repair worn claws is before they fail completely.
Regular maintenance allows us to rebuild worn claws while the stone remains secure, reducing both risk and repair costs.
Once a stone has fallen out, additional work may be required to locate a replacement and rebuild the setting.
Some gemstones are particularly sensitive to heat and may need to be removed and then reset once the claw work is complete.
Will I Be Able To See The Repair?
Our goal is always to make claw repairs as discreet as possible.
After retipping, the claws are shaped, refined and finished to blend with the existing setting.
In most cases, the only visible difference is that the claws now appear more robust and closer to what they would have looked like when the piece was new..
The exact result depends on the age, design and condition of the jewellery, but preserving the original appearance of the piece is always our priority.
How Long Does Claw Retipping Take?
Most claw retipping and claw rebuilding jobs are completed within two to three weeks, although turnaround times may be longer during peak periods.
Claw retipping is a more involved repair compared to simple ring resizes and chain repairs and you want to ensure the work is not rushed.
If additional repairs are required, such as stone replacement, resizing, restoration or rhodium plating, additional time may be needed.
We will always provide an estimated completion time when assessing your jewellery.
