Jewellery Restoration Bendigo

Restored antique diamond ring in Stone Theory Studio Bendigo workshop

Some jewellery is worth more than its metal and gemstones.

Whether it's a family heirloom, a treasured antique, a vintage engagement ring or a piece with decades of sentimental value, restoration work focuses on preserving the character and history of the jewellery while returning it to a condition that can be safely worn and enjoyed again.

At Stone Theory Studio, we specialise in jewellery restoration from our Eaglehawk workshop. All work is completed on-site. We never send your jewellery away, ensuring your piece remains in our care throughout the entire restoration process.

What Is Jewellery Restoration?

Restoration goes far beyond a standard repair.

While a repair may address a single issue, restoration often involves rebuilding multiple worn or damaged areas of a piece to return it to both structural integrity and visual beauty.

Many restoration projects involve years or even decades of accumulated wear and require careful planning, craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Antique & Vintage Jewellery Restoration

Older jewellery was often handcrafted using techniques and materials that are very different to modern jewellery.

Over time, these pieces can develop worn settings, thin bands, damaged claws, missing components and structural weaknesses that make them unsafe to wear.

Our restoration work regularly includes:

  • Antique jewellery restoration
  • Vintage jewellery restoration
  • Heirloom jewellery restoration
  • Engagement ring restoration
  • Wedding ring restoration
  • Restoration of family jewellery
  • Reconstruction of damaged settings
  • Rebuilding worn components

Our goal is always to preserve as much of the original character of the piece as possible while restoring its strength and wearability.

Common Restoration Work

Every restoration is different, but restoration projects commonly involve:

  • Replacing worn illusion plate settings
  • Re-shanking worn bands
  • Rebuilding worn under-baskets
  • Rebuilding worn gallery work
  • Reconstructing damaged settings
  • Replacing missing components
  • Stone replacement
  • Claw rebuilding
  • Structural reinforcement
  • Restoration of worn details
  • Restoration of antique and vintage mountings

One of the most common issues we encounter is wear underneath settings caused by rings rubbing against each other over many years. In some cases, entire sections beneath the setting may need to be rebuilt to restore the strength of the piece.

Can Every Piece Be Restored?

Not every piece can be restored economically, but many pieces that appear beyond repair can often be successfully rebuilt.

The extent of restoration required depends on:

  • Age of the jewellery
  • Metal condition
  • Stone condition
  • Previous repairs
  • Overall structural integrity

We will always provide honest advice regarding the practicality and cost of restoration before any work proceeds.

How Long Does Jewellery Restoration Take?

Jewellery restoration is often one of the most labour-intensive services we provide.

Unlike standard repairs, restoration work frequently involves multiple stages of rebuilding, fabrication, stone setting, finishing and polishing.

Most restoration projects take approximately 4 to 6 weeks, however more complex restorations may require additional time depending on the scope of work and the time of year.

Where parts, gemstones or specialised materials need to be sourced, additional time may also be required.

We will provide an estimated timeframe during assessment.

Why Restore Instead Of Replace?

Many antique and heirloom pieces simply cannot be replaced.

Even where replacement is possible, it often means losing the history, sentiment and craftsmanship that make the piece special.

A well-executed restoration allows you to continue wearing and enjoying jewellery that has often been passed down through generations.
