Pearl & Bead Restringing Bendigo

Pearls and beaded jewellery require regular maintenance to remain both beautiful and secure.
At Stone Theory Studio, we provide professional pearl and bead restringing services from our Eaglehawk workshop, helping preserve treasured necklaces, bracelets and heirloom pieces for years to come.
This is a particular specialty of Susan, who was the owner of the much-loved Bendigo Bead Experience on Lyttleton Terrace for more than a decade before joining Stone Theory Studio. With decades of experience working with pearls, gemstones and beads, your jewellery is in exceptionally capable hands.
All work is completed on-site. We never send your jewellery away, ensuring your piece remains in our care throughout the entire restoration process.
Why Do Pearls Need Restringing?
Pearls and beads are traditionally strung on specialised thread, cord or wire.
Over time, this naturally stretches, weakens and deteriorates through everyday wear, exposure to cosmetics, perfume, body oils and general ageing.
Eventually the thread can become fragile enough to break, potentially resulting in the loss of pearls or beads.
Regular restringing helps protect your jewellery and maintain its appearance.
Signs Your Pearls May Need Restringing
- Gaps appearing between pearls or beads
- Stretched or loose thread
- Fraying or fuzzy thread
- Discolouration of the thread
- Knots becoming loose or uneven
- Broken clasps or findings
- Necklaces that no longer sit correctly
If you notice any of these signs, it is usually time to consider restringing before the strand fails completely.
Are Pearls Knotted Between Each Pearl?
Traditionally, high-quality pearl necklaces are hand-knotted between each pearl. Some are not.
Knotting serves two important purposes:
- It helps prevent pearls rubbing against each other and becoming damaged.
- If the strand breaks, only a single pearl is likely to be lost rather than the entire necklace scattering across the floor.
Where appropriate, we can restring pearl necklaces using traditional knotting techniques or without knotting to maintain both their appearance and durability.
Can You Restring Other Types of Jewellery?
Yes.
In addition to pearls, we regularly restring:
- Gemstone bead necklaces
- Crystal bead necklaces
- Fashion jewellery
- Bracelets
- Heirloom pieces
- Custom bead strands
- Mala beads
- Special occasion jewellery
Each piece is individually assessed to determine the most appropriate restringing method and materials.
Can Missing Pearls or Beads Be Replaced?
In many cases, yes.
If beads or pearls have been lost, we may be able to source suitable replacements depending on availability, size, colour and material.
We will discuss the available options with you during the assessment process.
How Long Does Pearl Restringing Take?
Most pearl and bead restringing jobs are completed within one week, although turnaround times may be longer during peak periods.
Complex pieces, replacement sourcing or additional repairs may require additional time.
We will always provide an estimated completion time when assessing your jewellery.
