What is Rhodium Plating?
Rhodium is a precious metal suspended in a liquid solution. A thin layer is applied over white gold jewellery to create a bright, reflective finish while also providing additional protection against wear.
Over time, this coating naturally wears away through everyday use, particularly on rings worn daily. Re-plating helps restore the appearance of the piece and refresh its finish.
Hand sanitiser and cleaning products containing high levels of alcohol can strip rhodium surprisingly quickly, sometimes in as little as a few weeks.
Signs Your Jewellery May Need Rhodium Plating
- White gold appears yellow or grey in colour
- The surface looks dull or tired
- Scratches are becoming more noticeable
- Your jewellery has not been re-plated for several years
- Your ring no longer matches other recently plated white gold jewellery
How Often Should I Rhodium Plate My Jewellery?
As a general rule, once a year is more than enough for most white gold jewellery. In fact, we don't recommend re-plating more frequently than necessary.
Before new rhodium can be applied, any remaining rhodium plating must first be removed. Repeatedly stripping and re-plating jewellery more often than required can accelerate wear over time.
It is usually better to allow the existing rhodium to wear away naturally before reapplying it.
Many clients find they can comfortably go two to three years, or even longer, between rhodium plating treatments depending on how often their jewellery is worn.
The best indicator is simply how the piece looks. When your jewellery begins to appear dull, grey, or develops a noticeable warm tone compared to a recently plated piece, it may be time to consider re-plating.
Can You "Double Dip" Rhodium to Make It Last Longer?
No.
Once a piece has received a sufficient rhodium coating, applying additional rhodium over freshly applied rhodium does not create a thicker or longer-lasting finish.
In fact, excessive plating can result in a frosted or cloudy appearance rather than the bright, crisp finish rhodium is intended to create.
Unfortunately, it has come to our attention that some less reputable operators offer "double dipping" at an additional cost, claiming it will make the plating last longer.
This is simply not how rhodium plating works. It is a scam.
A properly applied rhodium coating is all that is required.
How Long Does Rhodium Plating Take?
We understand that many clients wear their rings every day and don't want to be without them for long.
In most cases, rhodium plating can be completed within a few days to one week.
During peak periods, turnaround times may be slightly longer. If your jewellery also requires repairs, resizing, stone setting, polishing or other workshop work before plating can be completed, additional time may be required.
We will always provide an estimated turnaround time when assessing your jewellery.
Can You Clean My White Gold Ring Without Rhodium Plating It?
Yes.
Professional cleaning will remove dirt, oils, soap residue and everyday build-up from your jewellery, helping it look brighter and the stones sparkle more effectively.
However, cleaning alone cannot restore worn rhodium plating.
If the rhodium has worn away, the ring may still appear dull, grey or slightly yellow after cleaning because the underlying white gold is visible.
In these cases, rhodium plating is required to restore the bright white finish.
Why Is My White Gold Ring Turning Yellow?
This is one of the most common questions we receive.
Many people assume their jewellery is yellow gold underneath, but this isn't quite correct.
White gold is created by alloying pure yellow gold with white metals such as palladium, platinum or silver. While this creates a much lighter-coloured metal, most white gold still retains a subtle warm or yellow tint.
This is why virtually all white gold jewellery is rhodium plated as the final stage of manufacture.
The bright white colour people associate with white gold is actually the rhodium coating—not the colour of the white gold itself.
As this coating naturally wears away over time, the underlying white gold becomes visible, causing the ring to appear warmer or slightly yellow.
Any time white gold jewellery is resized, repaired, rebuilt or altered, the rhodium coating must be reapplied to restore a consistent finish.
Why Is Rhodium Plating More Expensive Than Cleaning & Polishing?
Cleaning and polishing and rhodium plating are two very different services.
A professional clean and polish simply removes dirt, oils, surface marks and everyday build-up from your jewellery. Once cleaned, the ring is polished to improve its shine and appearance.
Rhodium plating involves several additional steps.
In simple terms, every rhodium plating job includes a clean and polish, but not every clean and polish requires rhodium plating.
Rhodium is one of the rarest and most valuable precious metals used in jewellery. Often worth significantly more than gold, it is prized for its bright white colour, exceptional reflectivity and resistance to tarnishing.
This is one of the reasons rhodium plating costs more than a standard clean and polish. In addition to the labour involved, the process requires specialised equipment, chemicals and the use of one of the world's most valuable precious metals.
